Minerals
- Zinc:
Zinc is critical to the entire body's immune and repair processes. The
study of skin injuries has shown a skin injury site becomes saturated with zinc
within 90 minutes of the injury. Zinc levels increase to a peak on
approximately the seventh day following the injury and return to normal at about
the fourteenth day. Other research shows that as we age, zinc saturation
of an injury does not achieve the same levels as younger skin and overall
systemic (bodily) zinc levels decline. The inability of elderly people to
heal quickly or heal completely is most frequently related to inadequate
zinc-injury response and low systemic zinc levels.
Among other names, zinc is frequently referred to as the "clean-up enzyme," required to remove damaged tissue caused by injury, disease and sun damage. In the repair or rejuvenation of skin, zinc is required in all of the repair processes. Inadequate zinc supply at the skin level inhibits the benefits of cytokines and impairs rejuvenation.
In addition to the removal of damaged tissue, zinc is required for collagen production and elastin synthesis. It is required for DNA repair. Zinc is required for DNA duplication, which is required for cell division. It is required for the production of superoxide dismutase, a powerful skin antioxidant. Zinc is a co-factor in the skin's production of certain metalloproteinases that remove damaged or mutated tissue. It is a co-factor in the production of adenosine deaminase, which signals T-cells.
Each of these processes is involved in healing and repair and without adequate zinc levels, the process of skin rejuvenation is slow or simply does not happen. When rejuvenating the skin with vitamin A, betaglucan, or panthenol there is no physical injury and the zinc-injury response does not automatically increase zinc levels to facilitate repair. Additionally, mature patients may not have adequate zinc levels in the skin. Therefore zinc levels need to be increased by topical application. Zinc should be included in any serious skin rejuvenation product.
Zinc is contained in Vitamin A + Antioxidant Complex and Bio-Essence Nighttime Calcium Complex. Since acne involves injury to skin, zinc is also contained in BiON's acne products. BiON is one of a rather small number of skin care manufacturers that understands zinc and formulates with this powerful ingredient.
Minerals - Calcium:
Calcium is a regulator of every organ in the body and the skin is no
exception. The skin guards its calcium level very carefully and the
calcium integrity of the upper epidermis regulates at least four major skin
functions and possibly others that have yet to be determined.
Calcium is just as critical to the health of skin as zinc. In the late 1990s the National Cancer Research Institute (NCRI) published the results of extensive research regarding calcium. Calcium regulates cell turnover [via cell "differentiation" stimulated by protein kinase C (PKC enzyme)]. Increased epidermal calcium stimulates rapid cell turnover and, therefore, turnover can be up-regulated with absorbable topical calcium resulting in plumper looking skin.
Calcium regulates the lipid barrier process. Peeling, microdermabrasion and cold winter weather strip the skin's moisture barrier. High calcium content in the upper epidermis helps maintain continual and efficient barrier functions. Patients with dry skin or dry skin due to weather respond well to topical calcium treatment. Calcium can significantly reduce dryness caused by microdermabrasion making the skin look well hydrated and fuller in appearance.
Patients receiving exfoliating peels, enzyme peels and microdermabrasion will benefit from calcium treatment to produce the desired rapid cell turnover and avoid lipid barrier dysfunction. BiON's Bio-Essence Nighttime Calcium Complex contains high concentrations of calcium to aid cell turnover and barrier repair. The product also contains zinc, betaglucan and panthenol to promote healing.
The NCRI observed that people with low skin calcium content experience greater premature aging of the skin and greater incidence of skin cancer. Conversely, people with high skin calcium content experience less premature skin aging and less incidence of skin cancer. Based upon this and other research, scientists believe calcium is also the regulator of the skin's production of powerful antioxidants. Calcium is known to have a direct relationship with catalase, a powerful antioxidant produced by skin.
Antioxidants prevent DNA damage that lead to premature aging of the skin and skin cancer. They prevent damage to collagen and elastin and all of the skin's components. Topical application of absorbable calcium, such as contained in Bio-Essence Nighttime Calcium Complex inhibits the aging of the skin via its up-regulation of antioxidants.
Other Natural Bio-Active Ingredients:
Antioxidants reduce and prevent skin damage and thereby provide anti-aging
benefits. As skin is repaired and rejuvenated, it is essential to protect
repaired tissue from new free radical damage. Some antioxidants also
promote repair functions. All BiON products contain antioxidants.
Products dealing with sun protection and anti-aging contain high concentrations
of extremely powerful antioxidants/repair stimulators such as green tea,
centella asiatica (hydrocotyl), phytosterol and polyphenol antioxidants, vitamin
E, alpha lipoic acid, grape extract and
others.
BiON has developed comprehensive anti-aging or skin rejuvenating products. Used alone or in combination with physical therapeutic stimulation, they produce dramatic long-term improvement in the health and appearance of skin. The key skin rejuvenation products are Vitamin A + Antioxidant Complex and Bio-Essence Nighttime Calcium Complex. Key anti-aging products are Moisture Complex and Titanium Dioxide Sunscreen.
Be sure to read the "Skin Anti-Aging" page to understand the aging process and minimize future damage to your skin and your body.
