Folliculitis
Barbae
(In-grown Hairs)
Serious
Corrective Treatment:
Folliculitis Barbae
(In-Grown Hairs)
Symptoms:
1. This condition can look like acne with pus filled
infections that look like pimples.
2. Caused by curly, coarse beard hair that grows into the sides of the
hair follicles following
shaving, causing infections.
3. Occurs more frequently in men with darker skin types.
Folliculitis can occur anywhere there is an injury or damage to the hair follicle caused by the rubbing of clothing or blockage of the follicle (follicular congestion). Folliculitis barbae is a male skin condition that occurs more frequently with particularly curly beard hair. Following shaving the curly hair grows within the follicle in a corkscrew manner and into the follicle lining. The follicle opening may also be partially blocked by cellular debris, which increases the frequency of in-grown hairs. Inflammation and an infection frequently result. Folliculitis barbae is not acne but has similarities to acne, such as pustules and infection.
Traditional acne products are generally not effective in treating folliculitis. Folliculitis is caused by Staphylococcus bacteria (staph) and not by propionibacterium acnes, which causes acne. If product information does not include mention of this distinction and address the control of Staphylococcus bacteria, it is not likely the products control this bacteria. Treatment with these products may be ineffectual.
Effective
treatment must include removal and control of Staphylococcus bacteria. Antibacterial
Cleanser kills propionibacterium acnes, and it also kills Staphylococcus
(staph), E. coli, Salmonella and a number of other dreaded bacteria. This
is achieved with cinnamon bark extract and a combination of herbs with unique
antibacterial properties. Antibacterial Cleanser will remove staph from
the skin to help prevent new infections and kill bacteria in existing infection,
which spill onto the skin.
Glycolic Gel, Salicylic-Glycolic Gel and Follicle Clearing Lotion remove cellular debris from the follicles to keep the openings clear and allow the hair to pass beyond the follicle openings. This significantly reduces the potential for new in-grown hairs. Salicylic-Glycolic Gel is ideal for excessively oily skin, while Glycolic Gel is suited to normal, combination and oily skin. Follicle Clearing Lotion is ideal for dry or sensitive skin types.
Treatment in the AM should follow shaving. The razor should be cleansed with Antibacterial Cleanser as it will retain bacteria. Pillow cases should be changed frequently, as well as towels or wash cloths.
Waxing-Induced
Folliculitis
Following waxing, salon customers may experience folliculitis infections
(in-grown hair infections).
This is relatively common with bikini waxing. Treating the waxed area with
a thin application of Acne Inhibiting Gel 2-3 times daily for 2-3 days following
waxing will usually prevent in-grown hairs and infections, as well as reduce
irritation caused by waxing.
