Aging Skin
Physical Conditions and
Opportunities:
Skin
aging is caused by free radical damage from sun exposure and our normal bodily
functions, plus alterations in chemical conditions that significantly increase
with age. Additionally, progressive deterioration of the microvascular
system (tiny feeder vessels in the skin) compromises the flow of nutrients and
oxygen into the skin and the removal of waste matter. Cumulative free
radical damage to elastin and collagen
results in a loss of elastic quality that allows the skin to stretch and
wrinkle. Cumulative free radical damage causes damage to
cellular DNA compromising cellular abilities and functions, which collectively
compromises the skin's appearance, health and performance. Since immune
processes are driven by cellular DNA, immune functions diminish and repair
processes become slower and less effective.
Traditional Treatments:
Much attention has been given to treating aging skin with alpha hydroxy acids,
enzymes and microdermabrasion to reduce the dull and unevenly pigmented stratum
corneum and indirectly stimulate cell turnover. These processes
temporarily improve the appearance of the skin, however, they have no impact
upon the microvascular system, elastin, collagen, cellular DNA damage and skin
immune functions. A comprehensive approach to skin rejuvenation must
address multiple aspects of the skin aging process.
The
skin is a regenerative organ and given the opportunity and stimulation it will
repair itself. This can be seen with laser peels that produce a visible,
but yet controlled deep
skin injury. The dramatic improvement in the skin's appearance following
these procedures is caused by the skin's immune and repair processes. The
peel only serves as an instrument to stimulate these responses.
Study of the chemistry involved in repair processes is providing knowledge of the chemical signals that regulate repair and rejuvenation. In time it will be possible to activate quick repair cascades without the use of controlled injury. Certain chemicals, natural to the skin, have already been identified and are seen in correct combinations in more progressive skin product formulas.
